Under California law, the County Election Official must certify election results no later than 30 days following the election — December 3, 2020. Read on to learn more about what to expect after election results are certified.

Adoption of Election Results

Once the San Mateo County Election Official has certified the results of the November 3, 2020 election, the final results are transmitted to the City Clerk, who is the Redwood City Election Official. The City Clerk will then submit the certified election results, along with a resolution to adopt the results to the City Council. The City Council is required to adopt the resolution in accordance with California Elections Code 10263, and the City Clerk is required to enter into the minutes a statement of the results. The statement includes information like the total number of votes cast in Redwood City, the names of each candidate and the office they sought, and the total number of votes received by each candidate including precinct totals.

The adoption of the November 3, 2020 election results will take place at the December 7, 2020 City Council Meeting. Access City Council meeting agendas and minutes, and livestream meetings here.

City Council Reorganization

At the same meeting, the newly elected City Councilmembers will be sworn-in and the outgoing Councilmembers, Councilmember Ian Bain and Vice Mayor Shelly Masur, will be honored for their service to the city. Once the new Councilmembers have been sworn-in, a reorganization will occur, including the installation of a new Vice Mayor to replace outgoing Vice Mayor Masur. Members of the public are welcome to give public comment during this portion of the meeting. Public comment can be submitted in advance via email to council@redwoodcity.org or may be given orally during the meeting by joining the virtual Zoom meeting.

For details on how to join the virtual meeting, review the December 7, 2020 City Council Meeting Agenda posted here on December 3, 2020.
