Redwood City boasts an abundance of inviting open spaces and recreation activities for community members of all ages, which contribute greatly to our vibrant and diverse community. Have you ever wondered how the City makes decisions about our local parks, recreation activities and the services available to our community? Do you want to be a part of that process? Consider applying to serve on the Parks, Recreation & Community Services Commission.
The Parks, Recreation & Community Services Commission consists of seven members appointed by the City Council, each for a term of four years. Their mission states, “through community outreach and engagement, the Parks, Recreation & Community Services Commission advocates, advises, and recommends policies and programs to the City Council that enrich the lives of those that live, work, and play in Redwood City. The Commission is empowered by the Council to:
- Act in an advisory capacity to the City Council in policy matters pertaining to the acquisition and development of parks and the formulation of a recreation program to meet the needs of the citizens;
- Periodically review and make recommendations on the recreation and parks element of the City General Plan;
- Actively promote recreation and park activities within the City;
- Review and make recommendations to the City Council on the City Manager’s annual proposed budget for recreation and parks from a pure policy standpoint, pertaining only to programs, levels of service, and capital improvements
“Serving on the Parks, Recreation and Community Service (PRCS) Commission has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It has allowed me to give back to our community in a meaningful way by engaging with our neighbors, helping establish park policies and working with a great PRCS staff. Future commissioners will have an opportunity to enhance the magic of our Parks & Rec programs by having a direct input to activities and events for our communities. The most rewarding part about being a PRCS commissioner is seeing all of the smiling faces in our city as a result of the hard work and dedication put forth by our PRCS department, and knowing that you get to be a part of something special.” — Pablo Lopez, PRCS Commissioner
