Every Redwood City resident contributes uniquely to our vibrant community and all community members should have opportunities to thrive. In an effort to support programs and services geared toward seniors in our community, Redwood City is proud of the contributions made by our Senior Affairs Commission.
The Senior Affairs Commission is an advisory body comprised of seven community volunteers appointed by the City Council, each for a term of four years. The Commission meets regularly on the second Thursday of each month at 1:00 p.m.
The mission of the Senior Affairs Commission is to encourage, foster, facilitate, establish and maintain programs for the enhancement of all matters relating to the social, economic, and personal wellbeing of the City’s senior population.
In furtherance of this mission, the Commission objectives include:
- To recommend to the City Council or City Manager the establishment of programs, stimulating and encouraging the development and maintenance of senior programs and services in the City, and to review periodically such programs as are so established.
- To review and make recommendations to the City Council and City Manager regarding the funding of senior programs and services that operate within the City for the benefit of the City’s senior population.
- Upon request, to advise the City Council and other boards and commissions of the City regarding any matter affecting the City’s senior citizen population.
The Senior Affairs Commission is currently focusing their efforts around key issues related to housing and transportation for Redwood City seniors. While challenges in these areas are not exclusive to seniors, addressing them with consideration for the unique needs of our senior population can go a long way toward creating more impactful and relevant solutions that address existing needs.
In the priority area of housing, the Senior Affairs Commission is working to:
- Advocate for housing availability for seniors at all income levels
- Update resources brochures for homeless seniors
- Meet with the Housing and Human Concerns Committee (HHCC) to identify needs and resources
In the priority area of transportation, the Senior Affairs Commission is working to:
- Create a senior transportation needs / interest survey
- Meet and collaborate with the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC)
- Encourage and support street and sidewalk walkability for all
While the Senior Affairs Commission has played an important role with many of the City’s key initiatives, one of the most visible and “largest” may be their effort in partnership with other Boards, Commissions, and Committees, City staff, and various community partners to bring about a new Veterans Memorial Senior Center-YMCA building. Learn more about this ongoing project and the benefits available to all community members that will result from the Veterans Memorial Building/Senior Center-YMCA project.
Members of the Senior Affairs Commission come from all walks of life. Some members offer their professional experience working with seniors through program planning and service provision, while others contribute their lived experience as seniors living in our community. This Commission benefits from the breadth and depth of experience and the shared goal of creating and maintaining programs and services that ensure all Redwood City seniors can thrive.
